Whey protein is a great source of protein and has become one of the primary supplements used by many bodybuilders. This has caused some confusion regarding the use of whey protein. Many individuals are under the impression that if they are not body builders than whey protein is not a supplement they should use however, that’s simply not the case.

Whey Protein for Women – The Basics You Should Know

Before I jump right into the Best Protein for Women I feel a little background on the subject is essential. After all you need to know at least the basics about whey protein in order to make an informed decision.

Protein is a macro nutrient required by our bodies in order to sustain life. It is the building block of life and is used to build new cells, for muscle & tissue growth and repair; basically it provides support for all of our body’s tissues, allowing us to exist and function.

Our bodies receive protein from the foods we consume as part of our daily diet. There are numerous foods that provide us with protein and just a few great sources include turkey & chicken, fish, cheese, meat, beans, eggs, nuts, milk and many others. But, can we receive enough protein from our daily diet? And, how much protein do we need each day?

Individuals that maintain a well balanced, healthy diet and lead an inactive or moderately active life may very well receive all the protein they need daily from their diet. However, individuals that don’t eat a well balanced diet, are dieting, maintain an active lifestyle or are trying to pack on lien muscle; may not be receiving a sufficient amount of protein on a daily basis.

So, how much protein do women need each day? Well, that seems to be a topic that’s open to debate and the number varies based on the source. Some standards show that women only require about 45 grams of protein each day. However, I don’t see how anyone can determine a set amount since we are all different; different bodyweight, different size, different diets and different activity levels. Other reports indicate we need anywhere between 0.9 to 1.5 grams of protein for each pound of your bodyweight each day. I personally believe in the latter since this allows for differences in individuals and lifestyles.

If you’re not receiving enough protein from your diet a protein supplement can get you where you need to be. There are several different types of protein supplements available including whey, casein, soy, rice and pea to name a few. However, I feel whey protein is the best choice. Not only is whey the most popular protein supplement available today, Whey protein is an inexpensive complete protein that is rapidly absorbed by the body and has been shown to:

  • Help promote muscle growth
  • Help promote fat loss
  • Help support cardiovascular health
  • Help support a healthy metabolism
  • Plus numerous other health benefits.

What is the Best Whey Protein for Women?

When you begin looking for whey protein you’ll find more than 100 manufactures selling a whey protein supplement and some are marketed specifically as a whey protein just for women but, is that what a woman needs? After all, the reason for taking whey protein is to supplement the amount of protein in your diet; you’re not looking for a multi-vitamin, zinc supplement, calcium supplement, fat loss supplement or diet pill.

However, if a whey protein just for women contains pure, quality whey protein with enough grams of protein per serving and you’re looking for a supplement with additional vitamins and minerals then, one of the following supplements may be right for you.

As you review the different whey proteins, keep in mind that there are three main types:

Whey Concentrate: Concentrate is normally the best selling, is more economical, contains a low lactose level and the percentage of protein in concentrate can vary from about 25% to 90%.

Whey isolate: Isolate is more expensive, is practically fat-free, is usually lactose free, is the purest whey protein and the percentage of protein in isolate can vary from 90-95%.

Hydrolyzed Whey Protein: Hydrolyzed is typically the most expensive, can typically be digested by people with allergies and is often used for infant formula & sports nutrition supplements.

If you’re interested only in a whey protein formulated for women, these are the best whey proteins marketed specifically for women and may be your whey protein supplement of choice.

Best Whey Proteins Just for Her

There are more whey proteins for women on the market then the one’s I’ve listed below however, these are the only ones I feel provide a good value. Others I’ve reviewed were not as beneficial as the ones I’ve selected for one or more reasons such as:

  • Too many types of filler
  • Not enough nutritional value
  • Too many calories
  • Not a pure whey protein (usually a blend of whey and another protein type)
